Hvaldimir is the world-famous ‘Russian spy’ beluga whale who arrived in northern Norway wearing a harness in April of 2019. It is believed he was in a Russian military program for close to 8 years. He is currently over 1,000 miles away from the nearest wild beluga habitat and aside from interactions with humans, he is lost and alone.
He is a trained whale who spends most of his time at busy industrial salmon farms, which can poses problems for the farms.. Also, there has been a dramatic rise in unregulated tourism targeting Hvaldimir, which is often dangerous for him. He has been injured by boat propellers, sharp objects and fishing hooks multiple times, and there have been permits filed to have him killed.
HIS LIFE IS IN JEOPARDY IF THIS SITUATION IS IGNORED.
OneWhale, a nonprofit organization, created Team Hvaldimir to ensure he is safe and protected. Our team also educates salmon farms and tourists about his unique situation. Our team is on the ground with Hvaldimir in Norway, working in challenging conditions, all out of love for this special whale.
OneWhale works closely to advocate for Hvaldimir with a world-class team of whale experts, institutes and government authorities. We are aligned with Norway’s top animal welfare organization, NOAH for Animal Welfare.
Each month we cover expenses for our team and volunteers to be on-site including lodging, boat rentals, fuel, supplies and more.

At OneWhale, our mission is to protect Hvaldimir, while we advocate for his future in the wild with other belugas, so that he is no longer lost and alone. Our efforts also include co-founding the Norwegian Whale Reserve, with the vision to free other whales from captivity and provide them a natural safe haven in the arctic.
Hvaldimir is a beautiful, charming whale with a unique plight. Belugas are highly social whales and it is hard to see him lost and alone. His freedom was taken from him and we feel it is our responsibility to give him the best opportunity to thrive and live a healthy life in his natural habitat with other belugas.
